«Are You Selling Your Guadtahtahke, Margrethe? The Journey of a Guadtahtahke to Florence»
In the spring of 1879, an anthropologist and a botanist travelled from Italy to Sápmi to conduct field research among various Sámi communities. Their scientific interests spanned material culture as well as the collection of anthropometric and photographic data. Their first encounter with Sámi cultures took place in South Sápmi, before they continued northward to Troms and Finnmark, where most of their research was eventually carried out. After leaving the capital, and aided by letters of recommendation from Christiania as well as by a network of wealthy and well-connected Norwegians, the two scholars were able to meet a Sámi family living on the shores of Lake Øyungen. This encounter, which resulted in the anthropologist’s acquisition of a number of objects belonging to the household, was marked by power asymmetries as well as by instances of agency on the part of the family members. One of the two scholars subsequently provided a detailed account of the encounter in a travelogue published in 1881. Drawing on information scattered throughout this and other texts produced by the researchers, this presentation examines the dynamics at play during the encounter, as well as the ideological premises underlying the scholars’ interest in Sámi cultures and their desire to meet this particular Sámi family and purchase some of their belongings which are still held in the Ethnography and Anthropology section of the University Museum of Florence.
